STD Testing
Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing includes the following blood tests.
- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
- Hepatitis C.
- Hepatitis B.
- Syphilis.
The following STD’s are diagnosed by detecting the viral or bacterial invaders at the site of the active disease.
The human immune system builds antibodies that attack invaders. The antibodies will persist even though the invaders have been suppressed or eradicated. Therefore a blood test will not necessarily tell us if there is an active infection.
- Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). In women, it is detected using a cervical swab.
- Chlamydia, Candida and Trichomonas. A vaginal swab test.
- Gonorrhea. This is diagnosed in men and women with either a penis or vaginal swab.
- Herpes Virus type II. A swab from an active lesion will tell us that Herpes is the cause.
