Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies

Thyroid Peroxidase (TP) antibodies is a lab test used to detect an autoimmune condition of the thyroid gland. TP antibodies can attack and damage the thyroid gland. Peroxidase is an essential enzyme that is involved in energy production.
The human body has a complex immune system that is able to build antibodies that attack foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses and foreign proteins. Unfortunately, as we age our immune system just like our mind can become confused and forgetful. Just as we could mistake a Louisiana drawl for a French accent, our immune system could mistake a friendly enzyme and attack it with antibodies.
Autoimmune diseases are becoming more common and can cause problems anywhere in the body. Aching muscles and joints, inflamed brains and hearts and thyroid glands are some examples.
Whenever a body organ is under attack, a good general strategy is to support that organ. Studies have shown that Selenium 200 micrograms daily for six months can reduce Thyroid Peroxidase antibody levels and improve thyroid function. An iodine deficiency is commonly missed and should also be corrected. Taking thyroid hormone also can give the thyroid some needed rest.
There is a strong connection between autoimmune thyroid disease and wheat protein allergy. Other food allergies could also play a role.
